One of the men who was at the gas station at the begining of the book is now being held in a building in Atlanta, having research done on him to see why he is immune to the virus. The cold like symptoms turned out to be a huge virus that has been wiping out populations across the country and things are starting to get chaotic and less organized as society tries to cope. The girl who is pregnet ends up burying her father who died because of the virus, and finds that her and another boy, who she hates, are the only people left in town, and they decide to work together to head for a place in canada. The man being held captive kills the man who is experimenting on him and escapes. He walks until he finds a man who has a reasonable ammount of supplies and is living out his days with his dog in the country. The man joins him for the time being while they discuss ideas on what the world is coming too.

The next few chapters introduce a rockstar and a guy who is mute.
The rockstar is on a roll, and taking advantage of all the money he can blow. A friend of his explains to him that he needs to stop because people will eventually start taking advantage of him and he realizes how his real friends have slowly slipped away and all the people he knows are just talking to him for money and free drugs.
Another guy who is mute, is beaten up by a group of guys. The guys continuosly beat him wanting him to cry out, which he is incapable of doing. He is eventually "dumped" and left in the road and he passes out as a car breaks just a foot away from his face.
During all this cold like symptoms are being spread to many of the characters in the book often shown by sneezing.

The first part of the book introduces a few of the main characters. A man is seen driving down the road in a chevy from a group of people at a gas station. The man crashes and the group investigates to find the guy unconcsious and sick. The man's family, who were in the car as well are all dead, which the group lies to the man about after he wakes up. The man is then sent to the hospital and dies 20 miles away from it.
Another character is introduced as a girl recently discovering she was pregnet. She tells her boyfriend about it who comes to the conclusion of them either aborting it, or he'll marry her and take care of it and gives her the decision to make.
A family is also introduced as a few of them start to gain cold like symptoms.
